Filmmaker Khalik Allah’s work includes short films and the feature-length documentary Field Niggas; he was also one of the cinematographers for Beyoncé’s "Lemonade” video. The inspiration for his movies is on view in his photo book Souls Against the Concrete, a series of images that were made, like his films, at the corner of 125th Street and Lexington Avenue at night, writes New Yorker critic Richard Brody, who says Allah's images of people dealing with addiction and poverty “have an essential documentary urgency.”
