The New Yorker looks into a new book, The Apparitionists, a history of the spirit photographer William Mumler, “whose rise and fall in the late nineteenth century put him at the center of a debate about religion, fraud, and, of course, the material reality of our immortal souls.” The book, by Peter Manseau, notes that Mumler’s success at capturing visual evidence of spirits made his professional competitors suspicious. “If Mumler was pushing the medium into overt metaphysics, his colleagues wanted to know how,” writes Brooklyn-based writer Dan Piepenbring.
