Quentin Bajac, chief curator of photography at the Museum of Modern Art in New York, says the first photography book he ever bought — Richard Whelan’s Robert Capa: A Biography — is still the one he holds most precious. “Why I bought it at that moment, I’ve no idea,” says Bajac, who was just 20 when he purchased the book. “I didn’t have any special interest in photography at the time.” At the British Journal of Photography he explains how he became interested in photography, the evolution of French photography after the 1960s, and why he can’t afford to be nostalgic.
