To commemorate the 100th anniversary of President John F. Kennedy’s birth on May 29, the Smithsonian’s National Museum of American History will display nine photographs of the 35th president, taken in 1961 by Richard Avedon for a Harper’s Bazaar article. Avedon was the only photographer allowed to take pictures of JFK and his family between between his election in 1960 and Inauguration Day early the following year, notes Time LightBox. After the pictures ran in the magazine they were seldom seen.
